The Inland Fishing Capital of Queensland

St. George is a town in the Balonne Shire, 513 kms west of Brisbane, located on the Balonne River. The riverside walk is interesting and well signed with history and facts. We stayed at the Pelican Van Park

Tourist attractions include the Unique Egg, river cruises, wineries, murals, and Beardmore Dam. We visited the tourist information centre and saw examples of the Unique Eggs. They are Emu eggs.

We decided to do the Cotton Trail Drive, which turned out to be very good. We followed the cotton road signs from our van park and started at site 2 - the dam. Beardmore Dam was constructed in 1972, and has a lovely picnic area. Sadly one cannot see the dam water as there are prohibited notices everywhere.  All one can see is the wall and the outlets for the water.

Driving past the cotton fields and seeing the cotton on the sides of the road, we've seen before,  but we didn't know about the irrigation plan in place. It is part of the Murray /Darling irrigation system and water is allocated. Great irrigation channels have been built around the cotton fields to store water, and Weirs have been built.

We had a drive out of town and went to the free camp on the banks of the river.  Not a place we would camp

The town has a few murals. This one is the wool mural. We found the people in the shops very friendly and wanting a chat.

We stayed at the Pelican's Rest Caravan Park which was fine. The sites were big and the sunset was a bonus.
