Galena Bridge Free Camp Western Australia

Back in June, on our WA trip, we left Carnarvon intending on beach camping but it was raining and the tracks into the beach sites were water logged, so we kept going. We checked out the free camp - too exposed, so decided to stay at the Ampol Service Station but first being early afternoon we went out to Hamelin Pools to see the accommodation there and the stromatolites, but it was high tide and the board walk was closed due to the damage from Cyclone Seroja.

The van park was too expensive ($38 un-powered and $51.50 powered) ...

.... so we headed back to Overlander Roadhouse. Situated behind the road house, there was free camping in a large fenced paddock. There were four others there when we arrived and many more came later.

It was lovely and quiet and the food at the service station was great. We did have to maneuver around a large puddle of water on the way in and the way out.

Interesting house across the road - not sure why it is like this, but worth a photo.

The next day we continued south towards Kalbarrie and decided to stay at Galena Bridge Rest Area.
A really interesting place and we were right beside the river.
We met some lovely campers there and country music singer Sally Jane and her father.

The rest area is on both sides of the river, we camped on the southern side. There are picnic tables and fire pits for the campers, and some lovely walks.

It was a bit muddy to walk to the old homestead along the river, maybe next time, but we did do a few walks along the tracks.

We stayed a few days as it was lovely and peaceful and so many nice people. Peter also had to fix a leaking tyre - which he did very well. Next off to explore Kalbarri.
